GM sales up 9% in May on strong demand for Buick, Cadillac

General Motors and its Chinese joint ventures sold 276,109 vehicles in China in May, up 9 percent from a year earlier, the U.S. automaker said on Thursday.

That follows a 6 percent year-on-year rise in April and an 8 percent rise in March.

The company's sales in the first five months of the year came to 1.5 million vehicles, up 11 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Buick sales increased 15 percent, while Chevrolet deliveries rise 13 percent -- a sign that GM's value brand is recovering from an earlier slump.

Cadillac sales soared 59 percent to 6,118 units last month, as the luxury brand found strong demand for its Chinese-built models. While Cadillac remains far behind its German rivals, the company aims to boost annual sales to 100,000 units in 2015.

Sales of Wuling microvans rose 6 percent to 128,596 units, but deliveries of entry-level Baojun passenger cars fell slightly to 8,029 units.

Meanwhile, sales of FAW-GM Light Commercial Vehicle Co., GM's commercial vehicle joint venture with China FAW Group Corp. only sold 3,563 vehicles in China last month, slumping 25 percent from a year earlier.

GM plans to invest $12 billion in China between 2014 and 2017 and build five more plants to ramp up its manufacturing capacity, its China president Matt Tsien said at the Beijing auto show in April.

GM makes vehicles in China in partnership with China FAW Group Corp. and SAIC Motor Corp. Ltd.
