Audi's May deliveries advance 14%

Audi AG said deliveries in China rose 14 percent year-on-year in May to 48,174 units, staying on pace to record annual sales of half a million units for the first time.

For the first five months, Audi sales rose nearly 19 percent to 217,910 units, nearly beating its sales in China for the entire year of 2010.

Rivals BMW AG and Mercedes-Benz have not yet reported May sales for China.

Audi will get an additional boost this summer as its Foshan assembly plant, which produces the A3 Sportback, starts assembling the redesigned A3 sedan.

The German luxury brand's assembly plant in Changchun builds the long-wheelbase A4 and A6, as well as the Q3 and Q5 SUVs.

To boost sales, Audi -- which had 340 dealerships in China as of April -- is opening a new dealership each week.
