GM's Shanghai r&d expansion on schedule

General Motors says phase two of its advanced technical center in Shanghai is on schedule to open in the second half of 2012.

GM says the project will house advanced design, vehicle engineering and advanced powertrain development. Construction began last summer, and the project is one-fourth complete.

The 65,000-square-meter center will house 300 employees in 62 test labs and nine research labs.

GM says the new facility will complement its advanced materials laboratory, which opened in September. That lab has been testing batteries produced by selected Chinese suppliers.

The battery tests will be completed within the next three months.
