New specifications issued to help textile, apparel sector achieve carbon goals

Three new technical specifications have been formulated for the textile and apparel industry in China, providing standardized guidance for the country's textile and apparel industry to move toward its dual carbon goals, China National Textile and Apparel Council said on Wednesday.

The National Low-Carbon Day, which was first observed in 2012 to encourage society to participate in green and low-carbon initiatives, falls on May 15 this year.

China has set goals of peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and realizing carbon neutrality before 2060. The carbon emissions of China's textile and apparel industry stand at about 230 million metric tons annually, accounting for 2.8 percent of the national industrial emissions, according to the council.

The three new technical specifications focus on the evaluation of carbon-neutral textile products, textile carbon label, as well as the development and evaluation of carbon neutral factory for the textile industry. Details of the three technical specifications will be released by the end of this month, said the council.

"The introduction of the three standards fills the gap of relevant standards in the textile and apparel industry, and they are expected to lead the sector's green and low-carbon development," said Yan Yan, vice-chairperson of the council.
