KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 (Bernama) -- The ongoing international conference and seminar on manufacturing and material processing expects to get more people from the industry to be involved.
Making this call, the chairman of the International Conference on Manufacturing and Material Processing 2006 (ICMM), Mohd. Hamdi Abd. Shukor, said there was a need for more industry people to be involved in research activities, collaborations, while getting people from abroad to cultivate new ideas.
The ICMM and AUN/SEED-Net Fieldwise Seminar, organised by the Department of Engineering Design and Manufacture, University of Malaya, took off at the Cititel Midvalley Hotel, here Tuesday. It will end on Wednesday, March 15.
When asked on how Malaysia's manufacturing sector could compete with India and China, Hamdi said Malaysia needed to focus on technology if it is to compete with China.
China has a very strong position in manufacturing also because of its cheap labour and huge manpower.
He said that Malaysia would need to move technology to move ahead or else it will be left behind in the industry. There are lot of companies shifting to China, he said.
He also said that there was a lack of research by local universities in the area of manufacturing and materials processing and also conferences compared with other countries like Japan and the United Kingdom.
The ICMM06 is being organised in association with the ASEAN University Network of Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net), Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM), Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) and ACA-Pacific Pte Ltd.
Its objective was to provide a forum for researchers, managers and practitioners from academia and the industry to discuss applications of Material and Manufacturing processes, while opening to participants the chance to exchange information and experiences related to manufacturing and material processing.
Over 100 papers will be discussed in the seminars by experts including from Ireland, Japan, the United Kingdom, Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore. Technology, Systems and Processes Manufacturing, Material Processing, Simulation and Modelling, Tool and Design, Product Design, E-Manufacturing, Industrial Automation and Robotics, Metal Forming and CAD/CAM are among some of the topics expected to be discussed.
