Toyota sales up, Honda sales down in China last month

Toyota Motor Corp. and its two Chinese joint ventures sold 91,100 vehicles in China in September, up 26 percent from a year earlier, the Japanese automaker said on Wednesday.

BEIJING - Toyota Motor Corp. and its two Chinese joint ventures sold 91,100 vehicles in China in September, up 26 percent from a year earlier, the Japanese automaker said on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Honda Motor Co. and its Chinese partners sold 56,880 autos in the country in September, down 23 percent.

In the first nine months of the year, Toyota sold 710,300 vehicles in China, up 11 percent from a year earlier.

This year, Toyota this year aims to sell more than 1.1 million vehicles in China. If accomplished, this would see the carmaker surpass annual sales of 1 million vehicles in China for the first time, a target it originally aimed for in 2010. Last year, Toyota sold 917,500 vehicles in China.

A Beijing-based company spokesman, Takanori Yokoi, said Toyota is on track to meet the target. "There is no change in that," Yokoi said.

Toyota is sticking to its sales targets even though its joint ventures have had diverging fortunes this year.

Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Toyota's partnership with China FAW Group had lowered its annual sales target by 40,000 units, citing a slow economy and high dealership inventories.

By contrast, Toyota's joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group has not changed its annual sales target.

However, Honda is struggling to keep up with the rest of China's auto industry. The Japanese automaker's sales declined 2.5 percent year-on-year in August and 1.7 percent in July.

In the first nine months, Honda sold 502,352 vehicles, up 1 percent.

Honda makes vehicles in China in partnership with Dongfeng Motor Group Co and Guangzhou Automobile Group Co.
