China's production of EVs, plug-in hybrids soars in first 8 months

Production of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in China quadrupled in the first eight months of the year as automakers took advantage of generous government sales subsidies.

Through August, automakers in China produced 25,946 of the vehicles, up 328 percent year on year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which regulates China's auto industry.

Judging by production data for August, China's auto industry continues to ramp up. Last month, automakers produced 5,191 EVs and plug-in hybrids, 11 times the number in the same month last year.

Of that total, 2,447 were EVs and 1,594 were plug-in hybrids. Commercial truck makers produced 284 EVs and 866 plug-in hybrids. No fuel-cell powered vehicles were produced in August.

Sales data for EVs and plug-in hybrids have yet to be made available for August.
