Shanghai GM completes expansion at northeast China assembly hub
Shanghai General Motors Co., a 50-50 passenger vehicle joint venture between GM and SAIC Motor Corp., launched production at a third plant at its large manufacturing hub in the northeast China city of Shenyang.
With the third factory online, the complex now can produce 500,000 vehicles annually, up from 300,000 vehicles. It has also raised Shanghai GM's annual production capacity to 1.3 million units.
With an investment of 7 billion yuan ($1.1 billion), the new plant will be able to build up to five models on three platforms. It can also produce up to 450,000 engines a year, Shanghai GM said.
Shanghai GM builds the Buick GL8 MPV as well as the Chevrolet Captiva and Cruz models at the Shenyang production site. The new plant's first product is the redesigned Chevrolet Cruz.
Shanghai GM has two other production complexes in China: the Shanghai complex which can build 320,000 vehicles a year and the Yantai complex in east China capable of producing 500,000 vehicles a year.
The company is currently building a new production hub in the central China city of Wuhan that will begin output toward the end of this year. The Wuhan complex will have capacity to build up to 300,000 vehicles a year initially.
Shanghai GM is also constructing a dedicated Cadillac plant in Shanghai that will assemble as many as 160,000 vehicles annually after production commences next year.
In the first seven months of this year, Shanghai GM has sold 966,852 vehicles in and outside China.
