Tesla eyes leasing unit with taxi, rental firm
Tesla Motors Inc. has engaged a major Shanghai-based taxi and car rental company to explore the launch of a car leasing business in the city, according to Chinese media.
Dazhong Transportation Group Co. is working with Tesla to evaluate a lease program for the U.S. electric-car maker in Shanghai, reported China Securities News, a Beijing-based financial daily newspaper.
The Shanghai-based company is surveying its leasing customers to assess their expectations for Tesla's vehicles, the newspaper reported, citing Dazhong Transportation Chairman Yang Guoping.
Tesla opened a flagship store in Beijing last year. It is now delivering the Model S electric sedan to customers in Beijing and Shanghai. The company plans to build stores in 10 to 12 Chinese cities by 2015.
Dazhong Transportation, a Shanghai-listed company, owns 9,000 taxis and has a car rental fleet of nearly 4,000 vehicles.
