GM to launch 19 new models this year

General Motors and its joint ventures plan to roll out 19 new or redesigned models in China this year, GM CEO Mary Barra said.

Barra made her remarks during her first visit to China after becoming CEO in January.

GM's joint ventures in China will invest $11 billion (67 billion yuan) in vehicles, facilities and people through 2016, Barra added.

"The key to our success remains designing, building and selling the world's best vehicles," Barra said in a statement. "We will keep our focus on the introduction of cars, trucks and crossovers that can take on the best that the competition has to offer -- wherever we do business."

GM did not list the new and upgraded models to be introduced this year.

But Shanghai General Motors, GM's joint venture with SAIC Motor Corp., says the company will introduce the Chevrolet Trax compact SUV.

Compact SUVs are in strong demand in China, especially among urban Chinese consumers.

GM's microvan joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co., also has said it plans to launch a hatchback and an MPV at the Beijing auto show in April. The two models will be introduced under the Baojun brand.

Aside from Shanghai GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling, GM also has a joint venture with China FAW Group Corp. to produce light trucks.

In January, GM and its three joint ventures sold 348,061 vehicles in China, up 12 percent year-on-year.

Last year, sales of GM and its joint ventures in China rose 11 percent to 3.2 million vehicles.
