IHS Automotive predicts 9% rise in China's light-vehicle sales in 2014

Sales of light vehicles in China will rise 9 percent this year [2014] to 22.6 million units, despite tough restrictions on new-car sales in several major cities, predicts IHS Automotive.

The consulting firm expects sales of sedans, SUVs, MPVs and light commercial vehicles will rise more slowly as cities limit the number of available new-vehicle license plates.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers has not yet announced December sales. But IHS estimates that light-vehicle deliveries rose 11.8 percent in 2013 to 20.8 million units.

"Surging sales are expected to see a slowdown as government restrictions curbing new-vehicle sales are enforced across cities in China, as levels of pollution hit record highs," IHS concluded.

In December, Tianjin became the fifth city to announce restrictions on new-car sales. Beijing, Shanghai, Guiyang, and Guangzhou also have done so.

Meanwhile, IHS forecasts passenger vehicles will generate most of the auto industry's sales growth this year, continuing the pattern set in 2013.

Last year [2013], passenger vehicle sales rose by an estimated 15 percent to 15.7 million units, while sales of light commercial truck rose approximately 3 percent, according to an IHS estimate.

According to IHS, the Ford Focus appears likely to be China's top-selling model this year. In the first 11 months, the Focus generated sales of 365,341 units.

Through November, China sales leaders were the Focus, Volkswagen Lavida, Toyota Corolla, Buick Excelle and Volkswagen Sagitar.
