BYD plans European bus plant
BYD Co. plans a European assembly plant to build electric buses, following road tests in several markets.
"We need to have around 100 sales in Europe to justify a plant and we believe that day is really near now," Isbrand Ho, BYD Europe's managing director, said in a statement.
The company has not decided on a location for the assembly plant.
So far, Amsterdam's Schiphol airport has ordered 35 electric buses, and the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog has a fleet of BYD buses.
BYD has put buses into service on a trial basis in Paris, Bremen, Bonn, Madrid, Barcelona, Salzburg, Warsaw, Amsterdam, Brussels and Budapest.
The company also plans to deliver a bus for a road test in London.
BYD's electric bus is 12 meters long, and runs on lithium iron phosphate batteries. The company claims it has a range of 250 km in city driving.
