Magneti Marelli plans lighting JV in Hubei
Italian supplier Magneti Marelli has formed a joint venture with a subsidiary of China South Industries Group Corp. to produce headlamps and taillights in a new plant in Xiaogan in central China's Hubei province.
The joint venture, to be called Hubei Huazhong Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting Co., will invest 40 million euros (330 million yuan) in the factory. The plant, which will employ 800 workers, will launch production in the first quarter of 2015.
It will produce about 5 million components a year. Products will include xenon and LED headlamps, taillights with bulbs or LEDs, and fog lamps.
The joint venture's primary customer will be China Changan Automotive Group, which is headquartered in Chongqing.
China South Industries is a major industrial conglomerate that owns China Changan. With annual sales of 297 billion yuan, it produces military hardware, motorcycles, autos and other products.
Magneti Marelli operates a large lighting factory in Wuhu, and it opened a second lighting plant last May in Foshan. The supplier's China headquarters is located in Shanghai.
