Great Wall opens technical center with Baosteel
Great Wall Motors Co. says it has opened a technical center with Baosteel in Baoding to develop new types of steel to reduce vehicle weight.
The two companies will develop hot-stamping techniques, new grades of ultrahigh-strength steel and new materials for models such as the Haval H8 and Haval H2 SUVs.
Both companies will assign engineers to the facility.
Baosteel, China's largest steelmaker, produces 50 percent of the steel plate used by China's auto industry. The company supplies a number of automakers, including Volkswagen AG and Mercedes-Benz.
Great Wall is a privately held company based in the northeast China city of Baoding. It is China's largest producer of SUVs, and sales have been strong.
In the first half of this year, Haval SUV sales surged 78 percent, and Great Wall's profits rose 74 percent to 4.1 billion yuan ($672 million).
