Chinese firm to build Guyana's largest hydro-power station
A leading Chinese construction firm has won contracts to build an 840-million-U.S.-dollar hydropower station in Guyana, in the South American country's largest ever power generation project.
China Railway First Group Co., Ltd signed the contracts with U.S. Sithe Global Power, LLC and the Guyana government in the northwestern Chinese city of Xi'an on Tuesday, according to company officials.
While the American firm will act as the developer, their Chinese partners will be in charge of designing, purchasing materials and constructing the 165-megawatt Guyana Amaila Hydropower Station.
The facility, to be located at the junction of the rivers of Amaila and Kuribrong, will deliver electricity to Guyana's capital, Georgetown, and its second-largest town, Linden. Construction is expected to start in 2013 and last for 39 months.
The Guyana Amaila Hydropower project is the largest power project in Guyana's history and is also the largest project overseas for China Railway First Group Co., Ltd, the company officials said.
