BMW to double engine output in China by 2015

BMW AG's joint venture with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings will double its annual engine output to 400,000 units by 2015.

The partnership, dubbed BMW Brilliance Automotive Co., last week unveiled plans to build its second engine plant next year in the northeast China city of Shenyang.

The plant will start production in 2015 with annual output of 200,000 units.

BMW Brilliance's first engine plant, which also produces 200,000 engines a year, went online in March.

The engines will be installed in BMW's locally built models. BMW Brilliance currently produces the BMW 3-series, 5-series and X1 models.

In the first half of this year, BMW sold 139,367 vehicles in China, up 27 percent year-on-year. The figure includes 67,084 locally built models and 72,283 imported vehicles, according to LMC Automotive.

BMW Brilliance is headquartered in Shenyang.
