GM's China sales rise 12% in April on microvan volume
General Motors' sales in China rose 12 percent year-on-year in April to 227,217 units, as sales of its low-priced microvans jumped sharply.
SAIC-GM-Wuling Automotive Co., which markets China's top-selling Sunshine microvan, reported a sales increase of 27 percent to 127,362 units.
Last year, industry sales of microvans lagged after the central government eliminated sales tax breaks and scrappage incentives for small cars and microvans. April's results suggest that the segment is recovering.
While microvans did well, sales of Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac lagged last month. Shanghai General Motors Co. sales in China dropped 2 percent to 94,101 units.
FAW-GM Light Commercial Vehicle Co., a partnership that sells commercial trucks, sold 5,141 commercial vehicles in April. GM did not provide year-on-year sales comparisons for the venture.
Shanghai GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling exports a small number of vehicles to other emerging markets. But GM China didn't disclose their export figures.
For the first four months, GM and its joint ventures sold 972,369 vehicles in China, up 9 percent from a year earlier.
