China tops U.S. to become BMW's largest market

China has overtaken the United States as the BMW Group's largest market worldwide, according to sales figures released by the German company.

In the first quarter, the group, which produces BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce vehicles, sold 80,014 vehicles in China, an increase of 37 percent from the same period last year.

By contrast, the group's sales in the United States were 75,729 units during the same period, up 17 percent year-on-year.

The BMW Group's sales in Germany, its third largest market, were 66,222 units in the first quarter, rising 2 percent from a year earlier.

China has already become the largest market for Audi. It is the third-largest market for another German luxury brand, Mercedes-Benz, following the United States and Germany.
