Changhe to remain independent after strike

Jiangxi Changhe Automobile Co. has won the Chinese government's approval to remain largely independent from its corporate parent, Chongqing Changan Automobile Co., after its workers staged a four-day strike.

Changan and Changhe are both state-owned companies and each has a production joint venture with Suzuki Motor Corp. Changan has been trying to integrate Changhe into its own operations after acquiring Changhe in 2009.

Changhe's workers went on strike last Friday after hearing that Changhe's auto production will be transferred to Changan's joint venture with Suzuki. The reorganization would reduce Changhe's product lineup to microvans.

After intense negotiations with local government officials, the National Development and Reform Commission -- China's central economic planning agency -- has rejected Changan's consolidation plan.

The municipal government of Jingdezhen, where Changhe is headquartered, announced that Changhe Automobile's status would be left unchanged.

This includes its status as a joint venture with Suzuki as well as its brand, plants and product plans, according to the Jingdezhen government.

To appease striking workers, Changan also sacked Changhe General Manager Li Li, who was dispatched by Changan last year to run the newly acquired subisidary.

Changhe produces the Suzuki Wagon R+, Liana and Splash as well as its own microvans.

In the first 11 months of 2011, Changhe sold 68,760 Suzuki vehicles plus 43,643 microvans, according to LMC Automotive.
