GM, SAIC develop 3-cylinder engine

General Motors and SAIC Motor Corp. have teamed up to develop a turbocharged three-cylinder engine for the Chevrolet Spark and other small GM models, reports Motor Trend.

The engine will be part of GM's Ecotec family of small, fuel-efficient engines -- three- and four-cylinder units that range from 1.0 to 1.5 liters.

Jim Federico, GM's small-car chief, said the three-cylinder engines will feature gasoline direct injection and can be adapted for hybrid powertrains.

The Pan Asian Technical Center, which is jointly operated by General Motors and SAIC, developed the engine.
