FAW-VW starts building engine plant in Chengdu

FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co. last week started building an engine plant in the southwest China city of Chengdu.

Volkswagen AG's joint venture with China FAW Group Corp. will invest 2.8 billion yuan ($439 million) in the project. The plant, which will produce up to 450,000 gasoline engines annually, will open in March 2013.

The turbocharged engine will meet Euro 5 emission standards, according to FAW-Volkswagen.

The engines will be used in the redesigned Sagitar and Jetta models, which will be produced in 2013 at the joint venture's Chengdu plant.
