In Shanghai, gridlock all over the welcome mat

When it comes to traffic, the world's largest car market has officially arrived at a world-class level for auto show congestion.

By 8 a.m. Tuesday, a good hour before the doors officially opened in Shanghai, there was no indication that the Chinese were ready for the thousands of media that had descended upon this smoggy, hazy place.

The lineup of cars and coaches - across 8 lanes - stretched for miles along the route leading to the Auto Shanghai. Gridlock. Chinese style.

Frustrated show goers left their buses and walked on the highway. Cars honked horns. Merging traffic couldn't merge.

The world has come to Shanghai. It doesn't appear totally ready.
