Peugeot to unveil its first Chinese-designed concept at Shanghai show

PSA Peugeot-Citroen says it will launch its first Chinese-designed model, a hybrid-powered concept, at next week's Shanghai auto show.

The vehicle, developed by PSA's Shanghai technical center, is "a cutting edge concept car, 100 percent designed in China, 100 percent adapted to the needs of the Chinese market of tomorrow," the French automaker said in a statement.

PSA gave no details.

PSA is the second international automaker to develop a vehicle in China for the Chinese market.

General Motors developed the Chevrolet New Sail subcompact, which went on sale early last year. The New Sail was designed by the Pan-Asia Technical Automotive Center in Shanghai, a joint venture between GM and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp.

At the Shanghai auto show, PSA also plans to launch the Peugeot 508 mid-sized sedan. Shortly after the show, Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen will put the 508 on sale.

Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen is a 50:50 joint venture formed in 1992 between Dongfeng Motor Corp. and PSA.

The joint venture will build the 508 in its plant in the central China city of Wuhan.

Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen builds the Peugeot 307, 207 and 408 cars as well as the Citroen C4 Quatre, Elysee, C5, C2 and C-Triomphe. Last year, the joint venture sold 149,400 Peugeots and 224,000 Citroens.
