SAIC will market an electric car in 2012, report says

SAIC Motor Corp. plans to start selling its first electric car in October 2012, the Xinhua news agency reported.

The three-door small car will be powered by an 18kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 47kW electric motor. It will take six hours for the car to get a full charge for its batteries.

It will have a range of more than 150 km at an average speed of 60 km per hour, reported the official news agency, citing company President Chen Hong.

The electric car will carry a price tag of 170,000 to 180,000 yuan ($25,800 to $27,300).

But with a sales subsidy of 80,000 yuan from the central government and city of Shanghai, consumers will pay only 100,000 yuan to buy the car, Chen said.
