China's steel industry to focus on transportation and clean energy

China's iron and steel industry will sharpen its focus on transportation and clean-energy during the next National Twelfth Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), announced the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) on Monday, according to cnstock.cn on February 22.

Deng Qilin, president of CISA predicted that the demand for steel will descend though the nation maintains a continually-proactive fiscal policy.

"The government will tighten exports of 2H1R products (High energy cost, high pollution rate, resources depletion), so the demand of steel will decline." Deng said.

He stressed that steel enterprises should manufacture suitable products to satisfy customers. The focus will be on high-speed railways, urban rail transit, ocean engineering, offshore oil exploitation, large-scale and special vessels, energy-efficient autos, hydropower, nuclear power, wind power, super critical thermal power and ultra-high voltage grid.

Deng also emphasized the development and updating of special purpose steel and the importance to put the priority to the domestic market.

"The apparent consumption of crude steel is expected to reach 6.32 million tons, an increase of 5 percent compared to last year." Deng added.

He also mentioned that two steel bases of Baosteel and Wusteel will be constructed during the next Five-Year period. " Two modern steel mills will be built in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province and Fangchenggang, Guangxi Province.

Deng closed in saying that the supply of self-made iron ore concentrate will rise to 45 percent by 2015, compared to the current 40 percent.
