Buick drives Shanghai GM's sales up 43% in 2010

Shanghai General Motors Co., a joint venture between General Motors Co. and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp., says its sales soared 43 percent to 1.0 million vehicles last year.

Shanghai GM sold 550,000 Buicks, 471,600 Chevrolets and 17,400 Cadillacs, according to the company's Web site.

The partnership sells the Buick Enclave, Park Avenue, Excelle, Excelle XT/GT, LaCrosse, New Regal and GL8. It also sells the Chevrolet Cruze, New Sail, Epica, Aveo, Lova and Spark models as well as the Cadillac SRX and SLS.

Shanghai GM also exports small numbers of the Chevrolet New Sail and Spark to other emerging markets.

In addition to strong domestic demand, Shanghai GM credited its robust 2010 sales to energy-saving and low-emission engine technologies.

Models fitted with its energy-efficient SIDI, Ecotec and S-tec engines generated 63 percent of its China sales last year, according to Shanghai GM.

The venture says it will launch 12 new engines over the next five years to upgrade its vehicle lineup. Most of these engines will have displacements ranging from 1.2 to 2.5 liters.
