BMW showcases cultural heritage at Capital Museum

An exhibit of images, art and craftsmanship from BMW's latest cultural caravan was open to the public free of charge in the city's Capital Museum from Nov 23 to Dec 5.

Organized by BMW China and its joint venture BMW Brilliance in collaboration with the National Academy of Arts (NAA), the exhibit showcased intangible culture encountered during a journey through southeastern costal regions.

"Every cultural heritage is the crystallization of the best wisdom of a nation and the most precious wealth of a country," said Lei Xiaoyang, senior vice-president of BMW Brilliance.

Along its route, the 2010 BMW China Culture Journey collected materials from Shanghai, Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong to create a colorful panorama to present to the public.

Among the artifacts on display were elegant Jiading bamboo carvings, jade-like Dehua porcelain, vivid Caozhou wooden carvings and exquisite Fuzhou Longevity Mountain stone sculptures.

The show also had actual practitioners of traditional art forms who display their skills on site.

An expert in Xiamen's lacquered carving showed his skills, as did the Zhangzhong puppet troupe from Fujian's Jinjiang city. Folk singers from Meizhou in Guangzhou welcomed visitors with beautiful Hakka songs to show their hospitality and romance.

"In addition to exploring intangible cultural heritage sites along the route, this year's journey also focused on the close cultural links across the Taiwan Straits," said NAA Deputy Director Zhang Qingshan.

"The cultures on both sides of the Straits share the same origin and common development," Zhang said.

This year's cultural caravan was the third since BMW and the NAA formed a partnership in 2008.

Part of BMW China's corporate social responsibility effort, the culture journeys have traveled to 13 provinces and covered more than 10,000 kilometers.

Owners of BMW cars have joined company executives, cultural experts and dealers to explore more than 100 cultural sites and raised over 4 million yuan that has been donated to 35 projects.

After the May 12, 2008 earthquake in Sichuan, BMW China and BMW Brilliance jointly contributed 10 million yuan to set up the BMW Warm Heart Fund to help those in need.

The BMW journey has been listed as one of the official events on China's Cultural Heritage Day for three consecutive years.
