VW China sales up 48 percent through May
Volkswagen AG posted a 48 percent gain in Chinese sales in the first five months of the year, maintaining its status as China's biggest carmaker even though it failed to keep pace with industry sales.
In the first five months, industry car sales in China soared 55 percent to nearly 5.7 million units.
Led by demand for the Jetta, Santana and Lavida, the Volkswagen brand recorded China sales of 619,700 units, up 43 percent for the period.
Audi AG, China's top-selling premium brand, reported five-month sales rose 65 percent to 88,500 units. Skoda sales in China soared nearly 91 percent to 69,000 units.
Worldwide, VW group sales totaled 2.9 million units, up 18 percent from the year-ago period. In the month of May, VW's global group sales rose 8.6 percent from the year-earlier period to 604,200 units.
