Toyota China: No Corolla recall in China for time being

In response to the news that the Toyota Corolla will likely be recalled, Ma Chunping, an official from the PR office of FAW Toyota, said during an interview with CCTV that at present, the office has not received any information concerning recalling the Corolla in China.

Shinichi Sasaki, Toyota's executive vice president in charge of quality, said that the carmaker is now investigating the Corolla's power steering system, and will likely recall the model. Sasaki said that Toyota takes the complaint about the Corolla’s faulty power steering system seriously.

The Corolla is Toyota's best-selling model with almost 1.3 million units sold worldwide in 2009. Sasaki did not reveal the faulty Corolla model, the number and regions involved.

When answering the question regarding the time needed to replace the accelerator and brake pedals on 75,000 units of China-made RAV4s, Ma said that China-made RAV4 owners will be asked to go to dealerships for a replacement as soon as parts are available. Ma said that Toyota's related departments had started to implement the procedures to clear parts before the Spring Festival, and the accelerator pedals on the China-made RAV4s will definitely be replaced by February 28.

Ma said that among the clients who ordered RAV4s before the Spring Festival, only a few cancelled the order, but she also stressed that the sales of Toyota vehicles will be affected by Toyota's extensive recall.

According to sources from Guangqi Toyota, the Camry and Highlander models that are being recalled in North America will not be recalled in China because the models produced in China are equipped with parts different from the ones in North America.

An official from the Defective Product Administrative Center under the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China (AQSIQ) said that it is paying close attention to the development of the Toyota recall, and currently has not received any recall reports from Toyota Motor (China) Investment Company.
