Alcatel to open new R&D site in Chengdu, China

New R&D center will focus on mobile network technologies.

PARIS (AFX) - Alcatel SA said it will open a new research and development center in Chengdu, Western China before the end of this year, initially focused on mobile network technologies.

Later, the new center will incorporate the optical communications research activities already being carried out at another Alcatel site in Chengdu.

About 300 engineers will be employed at the new facility, which will be managed by Alcatel's Chinese joint venture Alcatel Shanghai Bell.

'The ready availability and abundance of research and engineering talent in China enables us to bring cutting-edge, cost-effective telecom technologies and solutions to our customers,' said Gerard Dega, president of Alcatel Shanghai Bell.

Alcatel said about 13 pct of its annual revenues are invested in R&D.
