China's Lenovo Unveils New Smartphone Brand

Chinese PC maker Lenovo Group has unveiled its first smartphone product named Lephone, along with a new laptop brand Skylight, during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Lephone is based on Google's Android operating system. It adopts the touch screen concept and integrates various communications methods, including phone, SMS, email, and instant messaging. This new product is expected to be launched in the Chinese mainland market around May 17, 2010, and the price is currently undecided.

Lv Yan, president for Lenovo Mobile, told local media that the company will initially sell the mobile phones by cooperating with telecom operator channels. Because the current Lephone is based on the WCDMA technology, Lenovo may select China Unicom, the operator of the WCDMA network in China, as its partner.

According to Yang Yuanqing, CEO of Lenovo, the company will be engaged in the development of more advanced and complete mobile Internet terminal products to meet the most popular network application demands.
