360 M. multimedia consumer electronics devices to be shipped in 2010: MIC

The Market Intelligence Center (MIC) under the Institute for Information Industry of Taiwan recently forecasted that about 360 million multimedia consumer-electronics devices would be shipped in 2010.

Major product categories in the 2010 shipments include MP3 players, portable multimedia players (PMPs), digital cameras, palm-top game consoles etc. Major appeals of these products would focus on web-based interactions as well as intuitive and funny operation interfaces. As the market becomes increasingly mature, MIC forecasted that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of the multimedia consumer-electronics market between 2008 and 2012 would be -1.5%.

With a better prospect toward the global economy in 2010, MIC said that the stronger purchase willingness of consumers is expected to drive international companies more actively develop new products and applications so as to upgrade revenues. The center estimated that the overall consumer-electronics market would turn into a positive growth in 2010.

The consumer-electronics market is showing a gradual recovery, MIC said, as major products such as blu-ray disc (BD) players, family game consoles, digital set-top-boxes etc. are showing increasingly smooth shipments. About 170 million consumer-electronics devices are expected to be shipped in 2010, while the 2008-2012 CAGR of the market is forecasted to be 3.0%.

The center pointed out that major appeals of family game consoles should be the innovative sensing control interface (like MSI's Chicken Shake), internet connectivity, web-based interactions etc. MIC said that after more and more sensing-interaction game software products pushed, the overall family game console market would begin to see clear growth in 2013.
