Audi remains China's largest luxury car brand in 2018

Audi defended its long-held position as the biggest luxury vehicle brand in China with annual sales rising 11 percent to 660,888 in 2018, according to FAW-Volkswagen, Volkswagen Group's joint venture with China FAW Group Corp.

The German brand, in holding back rivals Mercedes and BMW, benefitted from higher sales of imported models, according to FAW-VW, which sells locally produced and imported Audi vehicles.

With a reduction in China's tariffs on vehicle imports, deliveries of Audi’s imported models surged 20 percent to 60,188 last year. The number includes 12,523 A5 sedans and 10,210 elongated A8 sedans.

On July 1, the Chinese government slashed tariffs on imported vehicles to 15 percent from 25 percent.

Sales of Audi models assembled at FAW-VW increased 10 percent to 600,700. The tally includes 163,296 stretched A4 sedans, 149,775 elongated A6 sedans and 118,965 Q5 crossovers.

FAW-VW didn’t reveal Audi’s China deliveries for December.

Audi’s two main rivals -- Mercedes-Benz and BMW -- haven’t disclosed sales results in China for 2018.
