GAC: Electrified vehicles to make up 10% of 2020 sales

GAC Motor Co. expects electrified vehicles to generate up to 10 percent of its annual sales in 2020.

The automaker plans to launch two electric vehicles annually over the next two years, GAC executives said at the Guangzhou auto show this month.

The state-owned automaker unveiled a compact electric sedan, the Aion S, under the Trumpchi brand, at the show.

The electric Aion S is the first product based on GAC’s newly developed EV platform. With a maximum range of 600 kilometers on one charge, it will arrive in May next year, GAC said.

The next product to be developed on the platform, an electric crossover, will hit the market in the second half of 2019.

GAC currently sells four compact electrified vehicles – a plug-in sedan and a plug-in hybrid crossover, an electric sedan and an electric crossover. They were all adapted from the company’s gasoline products.

In the first ten months, GAC delivered 13,928 plug-in hybrids and EVs under the Trumpchi marque, nearly tripling the tally in the same period last year.

Despite the explosive growth in electrified vehicles, they only account for 3.2 percent of total sales under the Trumpchi brand this year.

Through October, Trumpchi deliveries rose 4.5 percent to 440,760.

GAC, based in Guangzhou, also operates vehicle joint ventures with Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co., Mitsubishi Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
