BYD to deliver 10 large electric buses to Toronto
BYD landed a contract to deliver 10 40-foot-long electric buses to the Toronto Transit Commission, Canada's largest transit operator and the third-largest transit operator in North America.
BYD also has the option to sell another 30 electric buses to the commission, the company said in a statement.
The Chinese EV maker this month also shipped electric buses to two public transport operators in Albert, Canada, and delivered four additional electric buses to St. Albert Transit, boosting total deliveries to the city to 7 buses, in addition to two electric buses shipped to Grande Prairie Transit.
BYD hasn’t delivered electric buses to other customers in Canada -- the city of Vancouver in British Columbia and Alberta’s Edmonton International Airport.
BYD ships electric buses to Canadian clients from its China plants. But the company’s assembly plant in Lancaster, Calif., will begin supplying all electric buses for Canadian markets, according to BYD’s public relations department.
BYD is the largest provider of electric buses in the United States.
The U.S. has about 300 electric buses in operation, of which two-thirds were engineered and built by BYD, according to BYD.
BYD also assembles electric buses and other EVs in Scotland and Brazil, and is building plants in Hungary, France and Ecuador.
In the first six months of this year, the company sold 74,884 electrified vehicles, which includes 3,614 electric buses.
BYD, headquartered in the south China city of Shenzhen, is listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai. It is partly owned by U.S. billionaire Warren Buffett.
