Mercedes-Benz maintains double-digit growth

Mercedes Benz’s China sales continued to grow at a double-digit pace, rising 14 percent year on year to 56,945 last month.

Through June, the German luxury brand’s deliveries jumped 16 percent from a year earlier to top 340,000.

Audi and BMW have not released China sales results for June.

In the first five months of the year, Mercedes-Benz outsold Audi and BMW to become the biggest luxury automotive brand in China.

While it produces the C-Class and E-Class sedans, the GLA and GLC crossovers, and V-Class vans locally, Mercedes-Benz exports several models to China.

The imported models include the GLE, GLS and R-Class, which are built at Daimler AG’s plant in Alabama in the United States, and are now subject to higher duties.

On July 6, the Chinese government imposed an extra punitive 25 percent on vehicles imported from the U.S. as part of retaliation for the Trump Administration’s tariffs on a sweeping range of Chinese goods.

In June, Daimler warned its profit would fall in 2018 as new import tariffs on light vehicles exported from the U.S. to China would hurt sales of high-margin Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
