Brilliance, BMW to boost annual capacity at China JV to 520,000

BMW AG and joint venture partner Brilliance Automotive Group Holdings agreed to expand production capacity at BMW Brilliance Automotive's two assembly plants in China to 520,000 BMW brand vehicles in 2019, BMW said Monday.

The expansion means the BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture's annual capacity will outstrip that of the German carmaker's U.S. plant in Spartanburg, S.C., currently its biggest plant in the world.

BMW said the two companies also agreed that the all-electric BMW iX3, to be produced by BMW Brilliance Automotive starting in 2020, would be exported from China to other markets.

BMW and Brilliance signed an agreement at a meeting of Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Monday, where the trade conflict between Europe, China and the United States was high on the agenda.
