Continental launches turbo plant in China
Continental AG opened a turbocharger plant at its manufacturing complex in Shanghai last week to supply automakers producing in China.
The facility is Continental’s first turbo plant outside Europe, the company said.
The 2,000-square-meter plant first will supply turbochargers for the 2.0-liter gasoline engine used in the Volkswagen Teramont SUV.
The factory will also build turbochargers for the Tiguan crossover and other high-volume models that Volkswagen assembles in China.
Next year, Continental will add a new building to the facility to expand output.
Turbocharger demand in China has increased rapidly as the country toughens its fuel efficiency requirements.
Honeywell International Inc., a leading turbocharger supplier in China, estimates that 47 percent of passenger vehicles sold in China will be equipped with turbochargers by 2020, up from 28 percent in 2015.
