Volkswagen AG's August deliveries increase 9.2% as Audi recovers

Volkswagen AG said August sales in China rose 9.2 percent year on year to 353,500 vehicles as the automaker’s Audi luxury brand continued to recover from a dispute with dealers.

For the month, Audi deliveries rose 10 percent to 54,205 vehicles, while Skoda sales were unchanged at 26,000. August totals for Porsche and Bentley were unavailable.

Volkswagen brand sales increased 10 percent to 265,400 vehicles and the automaker attributed the upturn to strong demand for its crossovers.

Last month, VW delivered 7,500 newly introduced Teramont full-size crossovers. Sales of the Tiguan compact crossover jumped 61 percent, and sales of the Magotan sedan increased 33 percent.

For the first eight months, VW Group sales in China edged up 0.7 percent to 2.49 million vehicles. That was enough to maintain a small edge over rival General Motors, whose sales for the period totaled 2.38 million.

While overall sales have been virtually flat this year, Volkswagen hopes to get a boost from a new generation of electric vehicles.

In 2018, VW’s joint venture with SAIC Motor Co. will introduce two plug-in hybrid versions of the VW Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq. And in 2020, Volkswagen will roll out the I.D. Crozz electric crossover.

From 2018 to 2020, the Volkswagen brand will introduce five additional EVs and six plug-in hybrids in China.
