Delphi to supply active safety systems to Great Wall

U.S. supplier Delphi Automotive has contracted to supply active safety systems to Great Wall Motor Co. for its next-generation SUV models.

Under an agreement signed last week, Delphi will deliver cameras, midrange radars and short-range radar starting in 2019. The active safety system will allow vehicles to detect and avoid road obstacles, thus preventing crashes.

The sensors also are building blocks for self-driving vehicles that can accelerate, brake and steer themselves on the highway.

Delphi said plants in Singapore and the south China city of Suzhou will supply components for new models to be produced for Great Wall’s new premium brand, Wey.

The private Chinese automaker plans to launch three crossovers under the Wey brand in the second half of the year. Wey, named after company chairman Wei Jianjun, is positioned as an entry-level luxury brand.

Delphi is the last global supplier that Great Wall has signed up for Wey. Last month, the company secured agreements with Continental AG, BorgWarner Inc. and Renesas Electronics Corp. to supply transmission parts and computer chips for Wey-badged vehicles.

Great Wall is China’s largest manufacturer of SUVs and crossovers. In the first five months of the year, the company’s sales rose 3 percent year on year to 396,272 vehicles.
