BMW plans to double light-vehicle output in China

BMW AG plans to double production capacity in China to 600,000 light vehicles over the next five years, the German newspaper Handelsblatt reported, citing company sources.

The German automaker also wants to build the X5 midsize crossover in China, as well as the X1 and X3, the newspaper said.

Last year, BMW built 2.37 million vehicles worldwide. The company wants to keep pace with rival Mercedes-Benz, whose China sales have soared over the last three years.

The company also plans to upgrade each of its assembly plants so that they are capable of producing electric vehicles.

BMW declined to comment on the Handelsblatt report.

In China, BMW has a 50-50 production joint venture with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings.

In the first three months, BMW China sales rose 12 percent year on year to 142,828 vehicles.
