GM deliveries slip 1.9% in April behind weak Buick, Chevy volume

General Motors' China sales remained subdued after the government reduced tax incentives for small vehicles in January, with volume dipping 1.9 percent year on year to 272,770 cars and light trucks in April.

Declines at Buick, Chevrolet and Wuling eclipsed gains at the Cadillac and Baojun brands.

Buick sales slumped 15 percent from a year earlier to 84,162 while Chevrolet deliveries dropped 10 percent to 32,044 last month, GM said.

Sales at the Wuling brand, China's largest minivan maker, fell 16 percent to 82,679, as shoppers continued to abandon the minivan market for bigger vehicles.

By contrast, both Cadillac and Baojun brands achieved explosive sales growth in April.

Cadillac deliveries surged 98 percent year on year to 13,903 as demand for luxury vehicles remained robust. It was the 14th consecutive month the brand has recorded double-digit sales growth year over year.

Baojun sales jumped 58 percent to approach 60,000 vehicles, reflecting strong volume generated by its newest model, the 510 compact crossover. Monthly deliveries of the crossover, which went on sale in February, topped 20,000 in April.

GM plans to introduce 18 new and refreshed crossovers, SUVs and multipurpose vehicles this year in China. At the Shanghai auto show last month, it revealed the first SUV, a compact seven-seater, for the Wuling brand.

GM didn't disclose accumulative sales in China for the first four months of the year.
