Great Wall's deliveries rise on crossover, SUV demand

Great Wall Motor Co., China's largest maker of crossovers and SUVs, delivered 168,729 vehicles in the first two months -- up 13 percent from the same period last year.

In January and February, Great Wall's deliveries of crossovers and SUVs rose 20 percent to 148,415 vehicles.

Pickup sales rose 11 percent to 18,975. But sedan sales nosedived 84 percent to 1,339 vehicles.

Great Wall has stopped developing sedans. It has only one sedan, a compact, to sell.

In February, Chairman Wei Jianjun said his company wants to sell 2 million crossovers and SUVs annually by 2020, more than doubling 2016 sales.

To achieve that target, Great Wall plans to launch more than 40 new and redesigned crossover and SUV models by 2020.

In April at the Shanghai auto show, the company plans to reveal the first production model, a compact crossover, for its new Wey brand. The marque, which was unveiled last year, was named after Great Wall¡¯s chairman.

Great Wall is headquartered in the north China city of Baoding and listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai. In 2016, its annual sales rose 26 percent from a year earlier to 1.07 million vehicles. Of those sales, 938,018 were crossovers and SUVs.
