Audi begins producing plug-in hybrids in China

Audi, China's largest luxury car brand, has begun assembling its first plug-in hybrid car in China to meet the country's increasingly strict fuel economy targets.

Last Friday, a plug-in hybrid version of the long-wheelbase Audi A6 sedan rolled off the production line at FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co.'s assembly plant in the northeast China city of Changchun.

FAW-VW is a 60-40 joint venture between China FAW Group Corp. and Volkswagen Group.

The model, known as the Audi A6L e-tron, carries a 2.0-liter engine with an electric motor that provides power to the front wheels.

The car consumes 2.3 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers. It has a range of 800 kilometers and can travel up to 50 kilometers on batteries alone, the company said.

Audi's first plug-in hybrid in China is the imported A3 compact car, which went on sale in 2015. The German brand will start importing a plug-in hybrid version of the Q7 crossover to China late this year.

The FAW-VW partnership currently produces a variety of Audi models, including the A3, the long-wheelbase A4 and A6 sedans, and also the Q3 and Q5 crossovers.

In the first nine months, Audi's China sales increased 6.3 percent year on year to 438,376 vehicles.

Audi's five locally built models generated most of that growth, with aggregate deliveries up 10 percent for the period to 402,960 vehicles.
