China's vehicle exports extend rebound in August

China's light-vehicle exports surged 30 percent year on year to approximately 43,000 vehicles in August ¨C the fourth straight month in which exports grew, reports the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Two Chinese automakers reported a big increase in shipments.

Geely Automobile Holdings' exports jumped 49 percent to 2,612 vehicles, while Great Wall Motor Co.'s shipments rose 18 percent to 1,527 vehicles.

However, China's vehicle exports for the first eight months were down 3 percent to 278,000 vehicles, due to a sharp decrease in exports early this year.

Other exporters such as Chery Automobile Co. and Chongqing Lifan Industry Group Co. did not disclose their shipment data.

Primary target markets for Chinese carmakers are emerging economies such as Russia, the Middle East, northern Africa and South America. Each of those regions suffer from weak economies, which is why shipments are down for the year.

But China's exports have gotten a boost from Volvo Car Corp. and General Motors, which now ship vehicles from that market to the United States.

Last fall, Volvo Car Corp. started shipping the S60 sedan from its Chengdu plant. And this year, General Motors' Chinese joint venture with SAIC Motor Corp. began exporting Buick Envision crossovers.

Monthly export data for the Volvo S60 and Buick Envision are not available.
