Great Wall cuts prices, boosts sales 45% in July

Great Wall Motor Co.'s sales jumped 45 percent year on year to 68,976 vehicles last month, as price cuts fueled demand for its top-selling model, the Haval H6.

As competition has intensified in China's crossover market, Great Wall has slashed the price of the Haval H6 and other crossovers several times this year.

Now the Haval H6 has a starting price of 88,800 yuan ($13,395), down 24 percent from a year ago. Stimulated by the price cuts, the crossover's deliveries surged 69 percent from a year earlier to 39,079 in July.

Great Wall also got a boost from the Haval H7, a compact crossover that debuted in April. The H7 generated sales of 4,079 in July.

Buoyed by price cuts and new models, Great Wall's overall sales of crossovers and SUVs surged 50 percent to 60,002 in July. Pickup sales jumped 36 percent to 7,688 vehicles.

While Great Wall expands its lineup of crossovers and SUVs, the company's sedan sales continued to shrink. Last month, sedan sales dropped 32 percent to 1,286.

In the first seven months, Great Wall's vehicle sales totaled 519,228, up 12 percent from the same period last year.

Great Wall, headquartered in the north China city of Baoding, has long been China's largest crossover maker. It is listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
