SAIC to sell MG crossover in United Kingdom

SAIC Motor Corp. says it will launch sales of a locally built MG-brand compact crossover, the MG GS, in the United Kingdom in the second half of the year.

The vehicle will have a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with a manual or dual-clutch transmission.

It is 4,500 mm long, 1,855 mm wide and 1,699 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm.

The MG GS went on sale in China in February with a starting price of 109,700 yuan ($16,900). Monthly sales have reached 5,000 vehicles, according to SAIC.

The crossover is the third model assembled at MG's Longbridge plant in the United Kingdom. The first two models are the MG3 hatchback and the MG6 compact sedan.

Nanjing Automobile Group Co., a state-owned automaker in east China city of Nanjing, bought the MG brand from bankrupt U.K. automaker MG Rover in 2005. In 2007, Nanjing Auto was acquired by SAIC.
