Magna opens r&d center in Shanghai to design seats

Magna International Inc. opened an engineering center in Shanghai on Monday to support its growing automotive seating business in China.

The center, in Shanghai's Xuhui district, has a laboratory and workshop to build seat prototypes, the company said.

The number of employees at the center will increase to 100 from 60 initially.

Frank O'Brien, Magna's executive vice president in charge of Asian operations, told Automotive News China in June that the company wants to expand its share of China's market for complete seat assembly.

A Johnson Controls spinoff dubbed Adient dominates China's seating market, but Magna is winning some contracts. In November, Magna established a joint venture with Chinese supplier Chongqing Hongli Zhixin Automotive Parts Manufacture Co. to supply seats to Ford Motor Co. and other automakers in China.

Magna also supplies final seat assemblies for Mercedes-Benz vans built at Daimler's joint venture with Fujian Motor Industry Group Co. and Taiwan-based China Motors Corp. in east China's Fujian province.

Magna operates 29 plants in China that produce body and chassis components, powertrain parts, closures, roofs and electronics.
