Japanese brands report double-digit sales growth for November

Four Japanese automakers, Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda, each recorded more than 10 percent sales growth in China in November -- yet another indication that China's purchase tax cut has had the desired effect.

Toyota sales rose nearly 14 percent year on year to 104,800 vehicles, while Nissan deliveries surged almost 22 percent to 122,700, according to Japanese news agency Nikkei.

Both companies benefited from China's tax incentive for small vehicles. The government has halved the purchase tax for vehicles with engine sizes of 1.6 liters and under to 5 percent. As a result, Toyota Corolla's sales increased 26 percent to roughly 26,000 vehicles.

Mazda sales rose more than 10 percent to 22,089 vehicles in December. Its China office attributed the growth to the tax cut as well as strong demand for its three models with Skyactiv direct-injection engines: the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 Atenza and Mazda3 Axela. The office did not disclose monthly sales of those individual models.

Honda sold 90,836 cars in China in November, up 33 percent year on year. The sales surge was led by robust demand for its two compact crossovers, the Vezel and X-RV. In December, Honda delivered 12,054 Vezels and 12,254 X-RVs. Both crossovers went on sale in the second half of last year.

Through November, Toyota sales increased 10 percent from a year earlier to top 1 million vehicles, while Honda deliveries surged 33 percent to 868,754. Mazda sales rose 11 percent to 210,190 vehicles. Nissan's sales for the first 11 months have yet to be made available.
