Changan likely to be first Chinese carmaker to sell 1 million vehicles a year

Changan Automobile Co. is on track to become the first domestic Chinese automaker to generate sales of 1 million passenger vehicles a year, company President Zhu Huarong said.

Sales of the state-owned automaker's sedans, SUVs and MPVs surged nearly 31 percent to approximately 839,000 through October compared to the same period last year.

Changan will easily achieve sales of 1 million vehicles this year, Zhu told reporters at the Guangzhou auto show last month.

Changan's sales growth was led by two crossover models, the CS 75 midsize crossover and the CS 35 compact crossover. Through October, sales of the two crossovers reached 287,921 vehicles, soaring nearly 135 percent from the same period last year.

At the Guangzhou auto show, Changan launched sales of its third crossover model, the CX20 subcompact crossover.

Despite the robust results, Changan's sales still lag far behind the two top-selling automakers in China, Volkswagen Group and General Motors.

In the first ten months, sales at VW's various brands in China tallied 2.89 million vehicles, down 1.7 percent. GM's deliveries in China rose 2.9 percent to 2.82 million vehicles through October.

Changan, headquartered in the southwest China municipality of Chongqing, has joint ventures with Ford Motor Co., Mazda Motor Corp., Suzuki Motor Corp. and PSA Peugeot Citroen.
